Recreating a viral NYC food scene creation, right at home! This recipe uses Carbone Fine Food's Sweet Pepper and Onion sauce to achieve a restaurant-quality Italian sub experience, designed to be held and enjoyed like an "ice cream cone."
Slice your Italian loaf in half lengthwise and use your hands to gently core the center (save the removed bread for homemade croutons!). Coat the cored loaf in melted butter and toast until lightly golden. Cook the sweet Italian sausage until it is fully cooked through, then remove it from the pan. Add olive oil to the pan and sauté the bell peppers and any remaining onions until they are tender. Toss the cooked sausage, peppers, and onions with the Sweet Pepper and Onion sauce. Arrange this mixture in a baking dish and layer mozzarella cheese generously on top. Bake the dish for 30 minutes at 400F (200C) until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Begin stuffing the baked mixture into the cored Italian loaf, making sure to scoop up plenty of sauce and melted cheese. Hold the sub vertically, then dust the top with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley. Wrap the sub securely in foil so you can hold it and enjoy!
